July 29, Axantum Software AB. User rating:.Last week I recommended that you take a look at Cryptainer if you need a replacement for the now-defunct TrueCrypt encryption product.
A handful of people have suggested that another free program, AxCrypt, is also a suitable replacement, and I promised to take a look at it. So here goes. It's a 3. Unlike TrueCrypt, which creates virtual encrypted drives, AxCrypt works on individual files.
If you want to encrypt multiple files, you'll need to do them one at a time, or add them to a zip file and then encrypt the zip. Which, if you've got lots of files but only a handful of them are confidential, actually works very well. Just right-click a confidential file, choose the Encrypt option, and you're done.
To open the file with whatever app it's associated with, double-click it as normal, and enter the password when prompted. However, while AxCrypt provides useful features, it fails one of the key tests here at Gizmo's.Used gmc reg cab short bed 4x4
According to VirusTotal it's not malware-free, and is actually picked up by 7 of VT's 54 separate scanning engines. In all cases, this is because it uses the OpenCandy system, which attempts to get you to install other programs at the same time for which the makers of AxCrypt receive a small payment.
For this reason alone, I can't recommend that you use the standard, installable version of AxCrypt. However, on the same download page mentioned above, there's also a portable version. The good news is that this doesn't use OpenCandy.
The bad news is that it isn't quite as usable.
AxCrypt. It's Good And Bad News.
You don't get "encrypt" and "decrypt" buttons added to all of your Windows Explorer menus. Instead, you have to run AxCrypt, which brings up its own Explorer-like interface, and do everything from there.
And because there's nothing installed on your PC, the encrypted files which have a. So double-clicking an encrypted file won't work. You'll need to open it in AxCrypt, decrypt it, then open it in your required application.
AxCrypt2Go, as the portable version is called, provides a useful function, but sadly it's nowhere near as usable as the OpenCandy-infected installable version. Comments WAIT! The solution to the OpenCandy issue is simple. Download the. Open the file with 7-zip. Just extract the. MSI is Microsoft's built-in package installer technology.I am using AXcrypt since a long time, and I was happy about it.
As I need to install it again on another computer, I realize that the new version ask for the password when we start the application, and it oblige us to use this same password for all the file. When I open a file encrypted with the old axcrypt, the system ask me to change the codification and to encrypte it with the password given at the begining and not to keep the original one if it is different.
I understand that with the new version we have to use allways the same password, which is known by Axcrypt organisation. With the old version we can have several password which can be different.Columbia mall
Is there a possibility either to download the old version to be installed on my new computer or to make the new one work same as the old one i. This has been discussed extensively elsewhere. The old version is no longer being developed, no support is provided and it is not maintained. The only solution is to use AxCrypt 2 or to look for some other, paid, encryption software which will do what you want.
I have just encountered the same problem. I have many old encrypted files with different passwords. For some of them, I have shared the password with other people. I do NOT want to change them, and I do not want that they are all the same. And I do not want that anybody having access to my computer can read ALL encrypted files.
The file-specific password should be asked whenever a file is opened. I find it unfriendly that your software has modified the files even when I only wanted to look at them. I have to restore them from the backup. Maybe you have a different usage case in mind, but for mine the new policy is completely useless. Sorry but for me you have just broken the software. Concerning the statement that you do not know my password, I can believe yo or not.
It is hard to make super-simple software that also caters to every use case. We try to make it as simple as possible for as many use-cases as possible. We do maintain that the key sharing functionality is so much better than the shared passwords used with AxCrypt 1. Nobody with access to your computer can read any encrypted files as such, however, anyone with access to your computer with your user rights and permissions can install any software on it so if you allow that you are insecure by default, regardless of AxCrypt-version or other software used.
I agree totally with Peter: you have broken the software by making it cumbersome! It is ridiculous that we must basically log on to Axcrypt every time we use it and that we must remember this complicated password you force the user to create when installing the software. The url you gave for downloading the old version does not contain the older version. The point with requiring at least a reasonably strong password with AxCrypt 2 is just that — to make it very clear that a strong password is required for the software to have any effect!
I did not say it was ridiculous to use strong passwords. I use them all the time in conjunction with a password management utility. What I DID say was that I felt it ridiculous that you must login to Axcrypt using a strong password just in order to encrypt a file that I want to email to someone. I should be able to assign a strong password for the file after Axcrypt startup. Why must I log in to do this?AxCrypt is a software that enables you to easily encrypt files and folders.
It's essential when you are sharing your computer with multiple users and want to maintain your privacy. Since this is an ad-supported product, you should be careful when installing AxCrypt. It offers to download a third-party component that it doesn't need in order to work properly.
The tool places itself in the Explorer context menu, so you can access it by right-clicking a file or folder. So, you can encrypt files by entering a passphrase and optionally a key-file, as well as set AxCrypt to remember this setting for decryption and to use it as default for encryption. In addition, you can encrypt a copy of a file and optionally convert it to the EXE format, clear the passphrase memory, create a key-file in the TXT formatas well as shred and delete a file.
You can also change the interface language. After encryption is applied to files, they receive an "AXX" format appended to the file namealong with the AxCrypt icon. So, other users cannot even view the thumbnails of your files which is a great solution in case of images, for instance.
AxCrypt can take a long while to encrypt a file depending on its size but it uses a very low amount of system CPU and resources. However, other processes clearly run slower during this time.
What is AxCrypt Premium?
No errors have occurred during our tests. Unfortunately, AxCrypt doesn't support drive encryption and there is no help file available. Otherwise, we strongly recommend it to all users.

All rights reserved.AxCrypt 2 makes me sad…Axantum created a nice utility AxCrypt and then made it totally different, and useless AxCrypt 2.
I wish you had named AxCrypt 2 something totally different; it bears no resemblance to AxCrypt 1. Why would I want to give Axantum the password to all of my encrypted files yes, I know that you claim not to store the passwords; I even believe you, but still….
Log off and the password is wiped from memory. I agree with you Ben, I was actually just about to write up a long winded post on this very topic. Axantum will thus treat you as a child and control the way you secure your files, much the same way Microsoft enforces updates on users — regardless of the negative outcomes. Maybe Jennifer uses my current setup with Shadow Defender and restarts prior to accessing her most private files. Axantum — in contrast — has determined that all of your encrypted files are of equal value, there is no need to protect them differently.
Congratulations, all of your files are now vulnerable.Spot gen3 satellite gps messenger review
Not only can the attacker steal your Daily Journal but they can steal your Sexy Photos as well. One aspect is that having many passwords will most likely be more inconvenient and thus make you less prone to use encryption.Warangal vandana phone number
I wonder, Would Axantum devs use the same password on every single website they visit? I certainly hope not. Remember, your feelings and any justification you have are irrelevant to Axantum, their design principles control the way the program works. Axantum fears you will put your feelings ahead of security, and thus it prevents you the choice. Also, it increases the risk of forgetting one of them. Or the attacker could wait until Jennifer next types in her other password assuming multiple passwords and then use that to decrypt the really sensitive files.
Both rely upon the attacker getting their hands on the data itself… so a key-logger and a trojan. Jennifer has serious security issues a trojan and a key-logger which encryption cannot solve. Jennifer should also educate herself on how to use a computer, avoid malware sites and she should install up-to-date antivirus, firewall and anti-spyware protection.
The opposite is also true. Having one very secure password means the data is much more safe because the user is less likely to forget it. With multiple passwords the chances of forgetting the various passwords are far greater.
Advanced users will use pre-scripted shell commands piped into GPG which allows them to choose their own encryption algorithm, hashing algorithm, number of iterations, file output format etc.
AxCrypt is intended for people who want the simplicity of something like an iPhone. Design it simply and more people will use it. Please try breaking the encryption though — the cryptographic community and world powers would be extremely interested and you could become a multi-billionaire overnight.
Extra steps are taken to ensure safety prior to opening the real secure files i. Rebooting with Shadow Defender, using Sandboxed Programs, etc. There's no configuration required. If you want to encrypt a file, just drag and drop it onto the program, and it's immediately protected with AES bit encryption.
Stripping protection takes a couple of clicks, and Explorer integration means you can do this as required, wherever you are.
AxCrypt makes it unusually convenient to work with encrypted files. If you want to view an encrypted document, just double-click it as normal, enter your passphrase and it'll be displayed in the associated application. Change the document and it'll automatically be re-encrypted, too, so your data will stay protected with the absolute minimum of hassle.
